Recycle Right Update!
Barbara Hume, Green Your Routine Chair
Many questions come up when people talk about recycling. How convenient it is to have our blue rolling carts to fill with all our recycling. But what can be recycled and what can’t? The general rule is:
The biggest issue the City of Fort Lauderdale faces is “wish-cycling.” This occurs when people aren’t sure if some is recyclable, so they put it in the cart to let the sorters decide. IF IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT! The second biggest issue is contamination. Some people intentionally contaminate because they don’t have room in their trash can for some of their garbage. They can contaminate their whole cart and possibly a whole truck! Wet cardboard, greasy paper and dirty containers are not to be put in the recycling cart. Items should be lightly rinsed out. Any wet fiber (paper, cardboard, newspaper) should be DRY when placing it in the cart. Once dry, it is absolutely recyclable. The greasy portion of a pizza box, including paper, should be placed in the trash. The lid of the pizza box, however, can be recycled. Plastic bags should NEVER be placed in the recycling cart. Return them to Publix or your local grocery store. Styrofoam egg cartons and clean Styrofoam “doggie boxes” can also be recycled at Publix. When we say no plastic bags in the recycling cart, we also mean don’t put your aluminum cans and glass bottles in a plastic bag and put it in your blue cart. They can get caught in the machinery and sifters at the plant. Every plastic bag needs to be torn open by the sorters to find out what’s in it. Please Recycle Right! |
